Choices...
A couple of weeks ago, I went to Stitches West with Hilary and Erica. We ran into another friend who was wearing a Sasha skirt (ravelry) and I fell in love with it.
The design is by Trudy Van Stralen and the pattern is distributed by Louet. You can see the details here.
I’ve had some skeins of Louet’s Euroflax Sport in a golden yellow color for a few years now, and Erica very...

Curses! $%#!
That’s me venting my frustrations over my Strago Socks knitting experience. I started this project a few weeks ago. By all accounts, it should have been finished within a week, really.
Strago has a very simple colorwork pattern; it’s only four repeating rows. Of course, stranded knitting, even a pattern this simple, is not mindless knitting that you should knit while watching a tv...

I love kate davies and her designs →
…and I have an obsession with Japanese knitting and crochet pattern books. There’s something about the photography and design of their books that’s just so sweet and appealing.
So, to have a Japanese book feature her work—well, I would love to flip through the pages:
“Happy Knitting”
BNN Publishing, Japan
ISBN 978-4-86100-847-4
This book also features designs by...

Final FOs of 2012
Here are some of my finished just-in-time-for-Christmas and end-of-year knits:
A modified Indicum pullover. (ravelry)
A sparkly red crocheted beret. (ravelry)
A shortened Bowline hat. (ravelry)
Although I really didn’t post much about it, 2012 saw the renewal of my knitting and designing. I’m really happy to look back at my photos and see how many new and different things I...

Block to measurements?
Block lightly.
Block as required.
Lately, this phrase and its variations, usually the last line you’ll read in a knitting pattern, has started to bother me. I mean really, exactly what is required?
For all of my knitting, I wetblock: that is, I soak and rinse the garment in shampoo or wool-wash, pin it out on a board to measurements, and let it dry for a few days. That’s easy to...

a little viking helmet
I’ve been back from Sweden a couple of weeks now, and when I think about it, two months was a long time to be away. But it flew by so fast, it hardly felt like two weeks. And at the end, I didn’t want to leave. Sad face.
On the plus side, being back to my more quiet and uneventful* life in San Francisco has been very good for my knitting! I’ve finished stuff (winter...

not paying attention...
i didn’t really think there was any way i could fumble a pair of baby socks. and here, i prove myself mistaken:
these were a test knit and if they worked out, i would have given them to a 6 month old baby girl. but because i didn’t pay attention to how many rounds i knitted for the instep, i’m pretty sure they’re too small. there were other little details that i...

catching up on lace-leaf hats
usually, when i take a break from blogging, it’s because i don’t have anything to write about. that’s really not been the case these past few weeks. i’ve been living in Stockholm, Sweden for a month now, and i’m here until the end of September. this stay has been part vacation and part working remotely.
there’s really quite a bit to write about. i’ve...

too little selfish knitting
i try really hard to be more selfish and knit more sweaters and accessories for myself. but, the truth is, i love knitting for my close friends and family—especially small projects like hats, socks, and other accessories.
i’ve already made the bf a couple of hats (the first one, shown here, was a holiday gift). and right now, my fingers are itching to cast on a couple of matching...

some finished knitting
so, remember that effortless cardigan i mentioned here? i’m still working on it. but, in the mean time, i’ve finished:
a baby shower gift
* pattern: ribbed baby jacket, by Debbie Bliss
* yarn: Cascade 220 Heathers, 1 skein
* needles: US 8 (5 mm)
* modifications: i used a thermal rib stitch for the body of the jacket. there’s just something about dressing a baby up...
hello cello!
did i mention that i started taking cello lessons 8 months ago? i’ve always loved this instrument and have wanted to learn how to play since i was in high school. with help from friends and coworkers, i found a fantastic instructor and rented a cello.
i’ve been practicing some minuets from Suzuki’s lesson books. my other lesson books are Feuillard’s “methode du...

hello, banana slug!
this morning, i went for a hike with my roommate and a couple of our friends.
i would not have noticed this little guy (and many more just like him) on the side of the trail, if my roommate and friends didn’t point them out. (i was too busy looking out for poison oak, since i was wearing cropped pants.) they humored me and waited while i ooh’d and ahh’d and snapped a dozen...

where does the time go?
a year has passed since my last post here. did i cast on any of the projects i talked about in “cardigans and pullovers”? no.
instead, i spent lots of time with friends old and new, driving around to scenic bay area viewpoints, hiking on and off trails, walking and running along beaches, traveling to familiar and unfamiliar places in north america, and practicing cello. in short,...

cardigans and pullovers
i’m at a bit of a crossroads with my crafting. i had two projects on the needles: a denim vest that is boring and a giant cowl that i was half done. last night i dropped a stitch on the cowl. it’s the herringbone stitch cowl and really, i couldn’t figure out how to pick up that stitch again. then i made such a mess of it that i wasn’t sure if i’d dropped more...

omg i've been knitting
i finished a really simple scarf using Knit 1 Crochet 2’s Souffle in Antique Rose. you can see a crappy picture of it here. it was just long enough to wrap around my neck a couple of times. i wore it to work.
after putting it aside for many months, i’ve gone back to knitting my lilas cardigan. it’s finally starting to look like an actual cardigan, now that i’ve knitted...

where's my t-shirt?
i walked past my coworker’s desk and saw this sign:
it’s not easy coming up with taglines that please everyone; i wonder who came up with this one, and why i’ve not seen it before now. it’s simple and cute. i like it. ^_^
